Keep Safe Australia!

February 2nd, 2011 by The BookaBin Australia Bin Hire Team

Cyclone Yasi crossing Queensland has been downgraded to category 3 but is still leaving scenes of devastation in its wake. The true extent of the damage won’t be known until daylight breaks but Queenslanders are being warned to expect carnage.

Yasi moved onshore in Northeast Queensland this morning with reports of hundreds of thousands of homes across the state now without power and people in the town of Tully reporting roofs being torn from houses. 18 meter high waves have also been recorded.

We hope you are all ok up there!

North Queensland Cyclone Clean-up Begins

March 25th, 2010 by The BookaBin Australia Bin Hire Team

Cyclone Ului crossed the Queensland coast near Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays, north of Mackay, packing winds of more than 200-kilometres-an-hour. As boats washed ashore at Shute Harbour, and about 60,000 homes were blacked out across the region, the State Emergency Service (SES) has taken more than 750 calls for help. Extra SES crews will be sent to north Queensland to help with the clean-up following the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Ului. Council work crews have now started the massive clean-up and extra SES crews are coming in from Townsville and Brisbane.

About 55,000 homes lost power so restoring power will take some time. Ergon Energy spokesman Bob Pleash says crews are still assessing the damage. The localized flooding is not the current priority, with about 20 houses damaged by the flooding, most of the calls taken were about fallen trees.

“Getting the homes with trees on them as safe as possible is the priority”, says Mackay SES controller Justin Englert.

Mackay Airport remained closed as officials assessed the damage, but nearby Hamilton Island (which had been lashed by gale force winds) did not seem to have experienced any damage to boats at the Marina.

Mackay Mayor Col Meng has asked for more SES volunteers for the region over the next week to help relieve staff.

Can I Put ……. In A ……. Bin?

November 8th, 2009 by The BookaBin Australia Bin Hire Team

We frequently get questions asking what types of rubbish can go in the different types of skip bins. So here’s the lowdown:

General Waste is typically anything involved with a “general cleanup around the house and section” that is neither liquid nor of a hazardous nature.

Use a Cleanfill / Hardfill skip bin, if you have any of the following:
Concrete, soil, sand, clay, rocks, rubble, bricks, sand, asphalt, ceramic tiles.

Use a Green Waste skip bin, if you have any of the following:
Grass, leaves, tree trimmings, small branches and other organic materials.

Only use a Soil / Dirt skip bin, if you have 100% pure soil / dirt (no turf or contaminants). No other waste can be mixed in this bin, additional charges will apply if other waste is placed in this bin.

Still have a question?  No problem.  Click the Live Chat feature on our site and one of our staff members will be happy to assist you further.

Congratulations!!!

www.cleanup.org.au is an organisation that works with the community, government and business to provide practical solutions to help us all live more sustainably every day of the year. Devised by yachtsman, Ian Kiernan, the organisation has been making a difference to the environment in Australia and around the world.

The mission of the organisation and its program is to inspire and work with communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment.

Clean Up Australia introduced the Green Teacher Award to celebrate and recognise teachers who have been a positive influence on students by carrying out environmental projects within their school community.

To be successful, teachers should demonstrate environmental excellence through the following:

• Implementing or maintaining a program or activity that contributes to the wide understanding of environmental issues
• Significant achievements and results of the project
• Working with students, teachers, parents or the wider community to develop the project
• Promoting environmental awareness on a daily basis

So Congratulations to these teachers helping to make a difference in their local communities! We are very proud of:

National Winner - Sandra Charlton, Gordonvale State School, QLD
Victoria State Winner - Susan Doull, Creswick North Public School, VIC
South Australia State Winner - Jeany Hoffman, Waikerie Primary School, SA
Western Australia State Winner - Jannina Halicki, Ellenbrook Christian College, WA

Unfortunately, no applications were received from for ACT, TAS, and NT, so maybe next year we can celebrate the successes from teachers in these areas also!
